Three CPI(M) leaders charged in a case concerning the assault on a judge in Belonia, South Tripura district, during a strike in 2015 surrendered before a court Saturday.
Tapas Dutta, Trilokesh Sinha, and Babul Debnath were booked in a case of assaulting South Tripura District and Sessions Court Judge Ruhidas Paul under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 447 (criminal trespass), 353 (assault to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention).
The judicial magistrate court found them guilty and awarded them two months of imprisonment, a fine of Rs 5,000 under section 447 (criminal trespass), and two years of rigorous imprisonment under section 353.
They challenged the judgment and appealed to the Belonia district court and then to the High Court of Tripura, where the verdict was upheld. Later, they approached the Supreme Court, where they were recently ordered to surrender.
“As per the direction of the Supreme Court, they surrendered before the court. They will stay in judicial custody. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled on March 18,” said a counsel.
Reacting to it, the ruling BJP took to social media and wrote, “The Supreme Court has ordered the execution of the sentences of Belonia’s notorious CPM leaders and anti-social elements, Com: Tapas Dutta, Com: Babul Debnath, and Com: Trilokesh Sinha, who were convicted in the case of insulting the country’s judicial system and harassing the Honorable Judge out of pride of power. Shame CPM Shame.”
