A local court in Tripura on Monday sent a 44-year-old man to judicial custody for the alleged rape and murder of his 14-year-old granddaughter while she was at her maternal ancestral house on Saturday.

The body of the girl was found buried in a paddy field early on Sunday, the police said.

The accused was arrested from Assam’s Sribhumi district, where he purportedly fled after the incident, they added.

“The maternal grandfather of the girl was arrested on Sunday, within 24 hours of the incident. He was produced before a local court yesterday with a plea for demanding his police custody for further interrogation,” Avinash Rai, District Superintendent of Police, North Tripura, told reporters on Monday.

However, the court sent him to judicial custody for 12 days.

According to the police, the girl’s mother, who is married to a family in Assam’s Sribhumi district, had come to her ancestral house in North Tripura on Saturday along with her daughter and husband. “Sometime later, the accused reportedly took his granddaughter away from her parents, saying he would give her a tour of the vicinity on Saturday. The family tried to search for the two after they were missing for several hours, but in vain. They alerted the police, and a joint search by the police and local villagers found the girl’s body buried in mud in a local paddyfield on Sunday.

The police officer also said that the accused was charged with different sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
