Tripura autorickshaw driver held for sexually assaulting minor

An autorickshaw driver was arrested for his alleged involvement in the sexual assault of a minor girl in Khowai district of Tripura and produced before a local court on Friday, the police said on Saturday.

The police have booked the accused under Section 75 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, based on a complaint from the girl’s family on Thursday night.

“On the basis of the complaint, we lodged a case against him. We started our investigation and based on that, we arrested him,” said an officer.

Last month, three minors were sexually assaulted in different parts of the state. In one of the cases, the police detained two people on August 22 in the Gomati district for alleged rape of a minor.

One of the detainees was relative of the 16-year-old rape-survivor.

Earlier this month, a man was convicted of raping a minor school student multiple times and was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in Unakoti district.

In May this year, a man was arrested on the charge of abduction and rape of a 14-year-old girl, three days after the incident.

A total of 144 rape incidents were reported during 2023-24, according to a Home Department report.

During this period, the police booked 140 rape cases and 30 women murder cases throughout the state, the report stated.
