AT LEAST 24 people, including women and children, were killed and around 30 were injured when a tractor-trolley carrying around 40 people fell into a pond in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district on Saturday. The injured persons have been admitted to a local hospital and rescue operations are underway, the police said.
The dead include 13 women,10 children and a man, officers said. A six-month old baby for whose mundan (tonsuring of the head) ceremony the group were travelling for is yet to be found, they added.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered condolences to the affected families.
The accident took place on the Riyazganj-Patiyali Link Road near Gadhai village. The police said that the people travelling in the trolley were from Jaithara village in UP’s Etah district and were heading towards Kadarganj to take a hloy dip in the Ganga.

Local residents said that the accident took place because the tractor-trolley was being driven at a “high speed.”
“Those trapped in the pond are being pulled out with help of a bulldozer. The injured have been admitted to hospital. A few passers-by were also hit by the trolley when it fell,” Kasganj SP Aparna Rajat Kaushik said.
“Rescue efforts are on and proper medical care is being given to those injured” said Ravindder, Commissioner, Aligarh division. Two children aged below ten years also succumbed at the Aligarh hospital on Saturday afternoon, taking the death toll to 24.
Offering condolences, CM Adityanath announced a compensation of `6 lakh each to the families of those killed and `50,000 to those injured.
President Murmu termed deaths in the accident “heart-wrenching” in a post on X. PM Modi called the loss of lives “heartbreaking” and “saddening” in his X post.
