A man was on Thursday arrested from a Rourkela-bound bus with Rs 6.53 crore he allegedly stole from a gold trader in New Delhi.
Identified as Farid Khan, 22, the accused told the police that he stole more than Rs 6 crore from Tek Chand Soni, a resident of Karol Bagh, along with his two accomplices — Vishal Mandal and Mohammad Kaif — all residents of Rourkela. However, police said before they raided the bus around 1.30 am on April 6, Vishal and Mohammad managed to escape and are still at large.
Gumla SP Ehtesham Waquarib said he had received a tip-off on April 4 about three suspects fleeing with cash from Delhi and will take the Gumla-Lohardaga route on a bus.
“The bus was intercepted near Chandali Polytechnic College. Four bags, which belonged to Farid, were found. Farid told the police that the bags contained Rs 6-7 crore in cash. After stealing the money, the trio reached Daltonganj by bus on April 5 and from there took a bus to Rourkela,” Waquarib told The Indian Express.
Khan told the police that Vishal is the “mastermind” of the robbery. “Vishal was hired by Tek Chand in January. After seeing the money, he hatched a plan and asked his friends to come to Delhi after which on April 4 they stole two gold chains and cash in five trolley bags,” said a police source.
