The Supreme Court Wednesday deferred hearing petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the 2023 law, which deals with the appointment of the CEC and Election Commissioners (ECs), to March.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N K Singh before which the matter was listed for hearing Wednesday did not take it up as it was preoccupied with other cases.
The bench indicated that it may consider hearing it next on March 19.
Appearing for a petitioner, advocate Prashant Bhushan said the matter was very important for the survival of democratic process and urged the court for an earlier date. However the top court said that the petitioners can take a chance on March 19 and it may not be possible to give an earlier date.
