Shops and other institutions in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur remained closed Monday in the statewide shutdown called by the right-wing groups such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, with unofficial support from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers. The public transport system also came to a halt on the day.

The total shutdown in the state capital was in protest against the communal violence in a village in Bemetara district (less than 70 km from Raipur) where a 23-year-old Hindu man was killed by Muslims outside a small mosque on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Bhuneshwar Sahu, the police said.

All shops were closed and people chose not to be on the streets. The streets near busy arterial roads like Ghadi Chowk and nearby Jai Stamp Chowk looked almost empty with right-wing groups taking out marches on foot chanting slogans.

The police personnel were deployed to ensure there was no violence. The police have also appealed to the public to contact the helpline number if they face any trouble.
