Agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries sectors are the backbone of the country’s economy and strengthening them will strengthen the country’s economy, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said on Friday.

Addressing the National Mega Conclave on Farmer Producer Organisations (FPO) in the cooperative sector, Shah said the three sectors together make up 18 per cent of India’s GDP, but are never discussed in the country. Unlike manufacturing, if agriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries sectors are strengthened through cooperatives, then employment opportunities will increase along with the GDP, he said.

On the occasion, Shah also released an action plan for the formation of 1,100 new FPOs by Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS). The event was attended by Union Minister for Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of State for Cooperation B L Verma, Cooperation Secretary Gyanesh Kumar, Agriculture Secretary Manoj Ahuja and other officials.

Shah said a new hybrid model should be designed so that a complete system for information exchange, profit sharing and marketing based on the arrangement between PACS and FPOs can be put in place.
