Ahead of second phase of Chhattisgarh polls, three security personnel injured in IED blast in Sukma

The incident comes on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a rally at Mahasamund district, about 400 km from Sukma, on the last day of campaigning before the November 20 elections.

Two days ahead of voting in the second phase of Chhattisgarh elections, three security personnel were injured in an IED blast in Chhattisgarh’s Naxal-hit Sukma district on Sunday. The blast took place between Bheji and Elarmadgu villages when a team of security personnel from the District Reserve Guard were conducting a search operation. All the injured have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

As the team was cordoning off the forest between Bhejji and Elarmadgu, around 500 km from Raipur, the rebels detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), police officials told PTI. “One jawan was seriously injured in the explosion, while two others sustained minor injuries,” Sukma Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Meena was quoted as saying by PTI.

The incident comes on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a rally at Mahasamund district, about 400 km from Sukma, on the last day of campaigning before the November 20 elections. Sukma, which voted with seven other districts in the first phase, saw an impressive turnout despite threats from Maoists to boycott the polls. Around 76 per cent turnout was registered in the first phase, the Election Commission said.

The blast comes three days after Naxals killed a road construction contractor and torched six vehicles in Sukma district. A day before another civilian sustained injuries at Sukma district in an IED blast.
