The Kerala High Court on Thursday rejected a public interest litigation that sought a ban on the entry of women in the 10-50 years age group into the Sabarimala shrine until necessary additional facilities are put in place there.
Rejecting the petition, the division bench of Chief Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar observed that the Constitutional bodies have the responsibility to implement the Supreme Court order. The court said that the petitioner, Thrissur-based social activist P D Joseph, can approach the Supreme Court if required.
Joseph said that the government was allowing entry for women of menstruating age as per the Supreme Court order without introducing additional facilities and safety measures at Sabarimala. He claimed that police were forcibly taking women to the hill shrine in a bid to implement the court order. He said women have been given protective gear by the police to take them to the shrine.
However, the court observed that police action was only to provide protection to the women.
