Ryan International School reopens for first time since student’s murder on campus

Ryan International School, Gurgaon, has reopened for the first time on Monday since the murder of seven-year-old Pradyuman Thankur on its premises. Pradhyman, a student of Class 2, was found murdered with his throat slit on the morning of September 8 inside one of the school toilets.

Parents and gaurdians, come to drop thier wards on Monday, told news agency ANI that the school should ensure that students are safe. “From now we’ll have fear in our minds till our kids would reach home. Ryan International School should look after their safety,” the parent of a student said. “Background check on staff should be done thoroughly; Educated people should be recruited in schools,” the parent of another student said.

A conductor of one of the school buses, 42-year-old Ashok, has been arrested in connection with the murder. Investigations are on to decipher the motive behind the murder. While it was earlier suspected that the student was sexually molested and was killed as he tried to escape and raise an alarm, a post-mortem report on the deceased student’s body ruled out sexual assault.

Meanwhile, Union minister M Gandhi, and HRD Minister P Javadekar, along with other officials from the CBSE, will be part of a high level meeting on the safety and security of children in schools. The meeting will be held today.

The school had been mired in controversy since the murder as reports have found that there were serious lapses in the security of the students. A two-member fact finding committee formed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), under whose purview the school conducts examinations, found that the bus drivers and conductors were using the same toilet facilities which otherwise should have been reserved for the students.

The committee also discovered a breach in the boundary wall of the school, which had been barred by barbed wires, making it possible for outsiders to enter the campus. The CCTV cameras of the school were also found to be defunct.

The CBSE on Saturday evening issued a show-cause notice to the school asking why it should not be affiliation should not be revoked for negligence and not ensuring safety and security of its students.
