Heavy rains claim six lives in northern India

Heavy rains continued unabated in Punjab and Haryana,leaving 60 villages in Yamunanagar district flooded.

Monsoon remained active in northern India today with several parts of the region receiving torrential showers which claimed six lives in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Four persons died in Uttar Pradesh and two in Haryana as the ‘Chardham’ yatra in Uttarakhand remained suspended following landslides triggered by incessant rains.

In Uttar Pradesh,Ganga was rising in Kanpur and Dalmau (Raebareli). Ramganga,Yamuna,Sharda and Ghaghara were flowing above danger mark,the Central Water Commission said.

Heavy rains continued unabated in Punjab and Haryana,leaving 60 villages in Yamunanagar district flooded even as situation in other parts of the region worsened with rivers flowing above the danger mark.

Army personnel along with civilians were engaged in rescue and relief operations in flood-hit Yamunanagar.

A 20-ft breach has occurred on Yamunanagar-Poanta Sahib national highway 73 following which traffic remained suspended on the busy road connecting Haryana with Himachal Pardesh.

The situation in Ropar and Anandpur Sahib areas of Punjab has also worsened due to overflowing Sutlej and additional release of water in it from reservoirs.

Incessant rains plummeted the mercury by around seven degrees Celsius in most parts of Punjab and Haryana as Rohtak received 52.1 mm of rains,Patiala 9.6 mm and Hisar 8.2 mm.

In Uttarakhand,Joshimath received the maximum rainfall of 51 mm followed by Nainital with 41 mm,Dehradun 40 mm and Deoprayag 38 mm.

Ajmer in Rajasthan recorded maximum rainfall of 4.4 mm followed Jodhpur at 3.8 mm. Kota,Bikaner and Jaipur recorded 2,1.3 and 0.3 mm rainfall,respectively.
