A 14-year-old boy was held in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur district today along with his aunt and uncle for allegedly murdering a neighbour for her jewellery so that he could buy a gaming console.

The three have reportedly confessed, and have been charged with murder, concealment of evidence and theft.

“The boy,who lives with his aunt and uncle (in Ekkadu village),had asked his aunt for a gaming console. She said she could not afford it. He suggested getting it from (their neighbour) J Rajam, who always wore gold jewellery. On Sunday, when the woman was returning from church, the boy invited her in saying his aunt wanted to give her mangoes. He then strangulated her, making her unconscious. Sarita (the aunt) then smashed Rajam’s head with a grinder stone,” said DySP R Gajendrakumar.

When the uncle,Baskar, reached home,he allegedly suggested that they dispose of the body far from home so that they wouldn’t be suspected of the murder. At around 9 pm on Sunday,Baskar allegedly stuffed the body of Rajam,68,into a gunny bag and, along with the boy, took it to a deserted spot 20 km away,in Kancheepuram district, and set it on fire.

The incident came to light when passersby noticed the body yesterday. When a sniffer dog tracked the trail to Thiruvallur, the police checked if any woman had been reported missing in the area.

They soon got to know that J Rogers Daniel had lodged a complaint about his mother being missing since Sunday afternoon. When the police questioned the neighbours, they said they had last seen Rajam going into the home of Sarita,28,and Baskar,31.
