Maharashtra school education minister Dada Bhuse said the government has asked schools across the state to make reading of the Preamble of the Constitution mandatory on this Republic Day.
“The schools hold different cultural programmes on every Republic Day. Besides those programmes, reading of the Constitution Preamble will be made mandatory for all schools across the state,” said Bhuse after the cabinet meeting on Thursday.
In addition to the reading the Constitution’s Preamble, the government has already directed schools to hold at least eight competitions and events on Republic Day. It includes Prabhat Pheri (morning march) after flag-hoisting, an elocution competition, a poetry competition, dancing, drawing, essay and sports competitions, and an exhibition. All of these events have to be centred around a patriotic theme. Bhuse said these are regular programmes every school holds on the occassion of Republic Day.
The mandatory reading of the Constitution comes on the background of Opposition’s allegations on the ruling alliance, both in the Centre and the state, that the latter is trying to modify the Constitution.
During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had led the attack on the BJP-led NDA that it wanted to win 400+ Lok Sabha seats to change the Constitution.
In the recently concluded Parliament session too, the Opposition continued with the similar attack and forced the Centre to hold a special discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of Constitution.
