Congress leader Rahul Gandhi files nomination from UP’s Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat

Meanwhile, the BJP has announced Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Rae Bareli.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Friday filed his nomination papers from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat, a constituency held by his mother Sonia Gandhi for the last two decades.

Rahul, who arrived in Rae Bareli hours before the deadline to file nominations ended, also held a roadshow. He was accompanied by his mother and veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, party president Mallikarjun Kharge and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

His candidature was announced early Thursday morning, putting an end to speculations of his sister Priyanka contesting from the seat. The family’s traditional bastion was vacant after Sonia Gandhi, who had won the seat in 2019, decided to move to Rajya Sabha.

It was expected that Rahul Gandhi could be fielded from Amethi from where he has won thrice, but the Congress has named Kishori Lal Sharma for the seat.

Meanwhile, the BJP has announced Dinesh Pratap Singh as its candidate from Rae Bareli.

Amethi and Raebareli will go to polls in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections — on May 20, and the results will be declared on June 4.
