The Congress has slammed the BJP over the alleged death threat issued to Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The alleged threat was uttered during a debate on live television by BJP spokesperson and ABV leader Pintu Mahadev.

“The BJP has crossed all limits… This is no off-the-cuff remark or hyperbole. This is a cold and calculated death threat to a leader who stands with every Indian in the fight for justice,” the party said.

The Congress in an X post asked if this was part of a “larger, sinister conspiracy” being hatched against Rahul Gandhi. “Does the BJP endorse the politics of criminal intimidation, violence and even death threats,” the Congress wrote in its post.

The party demanded immediate action against Mahadev by the state police. It also demanded condemnation of the “death threat” to Rahul Gandhi by the BJP leader and a public apology from the top leadership.

The party said in the post: “If the BJP fails to do so, the nation will have every reason to believe that PM Modi and HM Amit Shah are complicit in this despicable act.”

On Sunday, Congress general secretary KC Venugopal wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking action. KC Venugopal’s letter to Shah read: “In a brazen act of incitement of violence, Mr Mahadev openly declared that ‘Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest’. This is neither a slip of tongue, nor careless hyperbole. It is a cold, calculated and chilling death threat against the Leader of Opposition and one of India’s foremost political leaders.”
