Locked in a war of words with Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Congress on Saturday appointed senior leader Rajani Patil as the party’s whip in the Upper House.

The Congress’s decision to appoint  Patil, a veteran from Maharashtra, as whip is interesting given that she was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the current session for allegedly videographing the House proceedings.

Parliament is scheduled to reopen on Monday for the second leg of the Budget Session.

The disciplinary action against Patil was recommended by Chairman Dhankhar after the BJP lodged a complaint about a video posted on Twitter showing the Opposition agitation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply on the Motion of Thanks in the House. Patil is AICC in-charge of J&K.

The Congress also appointed veteran leader from Uttar Pradesh Pramod Tiwari as its deputy leader in the House. The post had been lying vacant after the retirement of Anand Sharma.  Tiwari was among those hoping to succeed Mallikarjun Kharge as the Leader of the Opposition.  The Congress is yet to take a call on whether to appoint a new Leader of the Opposition or let Kharge, who is now the party president, continue to hold both the posts.
