Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded a warm welcome by the Indian community in Dubai as he landed at the Dubai International Airport late Thursday to attend the annual Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).
The 28th edition of the climate change conference which began Thursday will run till December 12.
“A very special welcome,” PM Modi said on X posting a video of his arrival at the airport. He was extended an invitation by President of UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi H H Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Upon his arrival, the Indian diaspora greeted PM Modi with slogans including “Abki Baar Modi Sarkar” and “Vande Mataram.” Modi will make an appearance at the World Climate Action Summit for the third time, after his visits to Paris in 2015 and Glasgow in 2021.
“I am big fan of PM Modi. He is (my) favourite leader. I told him about the lotus saree that I am wearing,” a woman who was at the airport to welcome PM Modi told news agency PTI. She was seen wearing a saree with lotus flower prints.
The Prime Minister will have seven bilateral meetings, deliver four speeches and be part of two special initiatives on climate events during his stay in Dubai for around 21 hours, officials said on Friday.
“COP28 will also provide an opportunity to review progress made under the Paris Agreement, and chart a path for future course on climate action. At the Voice of Global South Summit convened by India, the Global South spoke for the need for climate action based on the principles of equity, climate justice, and common but differentiated responsibilities, as well as a greater focus on adaptation,” he said in a statement Thursday ahead of his visit to Dubai.
