Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Sri Lanka on April 5, the country’s president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced. Dissanayake made the announcement while addressing the Sri Lankan Parliament on Friday, according to news portal Adaderana.lk.

As stated by Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath last week, Modi’s visit will focus on finalizing agreements discussed during President Dissanayake’s visit to India last year.

The Sri Lankan president also informed Parliament that construction on the Sampur Power Plant in Trincomalee, a strategic eastern port district, will commence alongside Modi’s visit.

Dissanayake emphasized that Modi’s visit reflects the stability of Sri Lanka.

Last month, India and Sri Lanka reached an agreement for the establishment of solar power plants in the island nation, Sri Lankan Health Minister Nalinda Jayathissa announced.

“Consensus has been reached between the governments of Sri Lanka and India to set up solar power plants with capacities of 50 Megawatt (Stage 1) and 70 Megawatt (Stage 2) at Sampur in Trincomalee. The project will be a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), based on construction, ownership, and operation,” Jayathissa said.

Initially, NTPC was to construct a coal-based power plant at the site. However, the revised agreement converts the project into a solar power station.
