Rahul Gandhi attacks Modi: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “is frightened of Trump”. Reacting to US President Donald Trump’s assertion that India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, he said that PM Modi kept writing congratulatory messages (on X) for Trump despite his snubs (on tariffs and India-Pakistan ceasefire claims).
Rahul Gandhi said that PM Modi “cancelled the Finance Minister’s visit to America” and “doesn’t contradict him on Operation Sindoor”.
After Trump hiked tariffs on India’s imports in the US, Rahul Gandhi in August said: “Trump’s 50% tariff is economic blackmail – an attempt to bully India into an unfair trade deal. PM Modi better not let his weakness override the interests of the Indian people.”
In June, Rahul Gandhi courted controversy after he said that Trump had asked Modi to “surrender”. “I now know the BJP and RSS people very well. Just put a little pressure on them, give them a slight push, they run away in fear. Trump gave just a signal, picked up the phone and said, ‘Modiji, what are you doing? Narendar, surrender.’ Saying ‘Yes, sir’, Narendra Modi obeyed Trump’s signal,” he said.
Trump on Thursday said he had anged to convince PM Modi to stop buying oil from Russia. “Some would be in there for a few months and this was year after year after year and my friend has been there now for a long time and he’s assured me there will be no oil purchases from Russia…He’s not buying his oil from Russia…He can’t do it immediately. It’s a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over soon,” Trump said.
However, there is no confirmation from the Centre of such an agreement being in place.
Modi posted multiple messages on X congratulating Donald Trump or his Gaza peace efforts. First, when Trump floated his 20-point peace plan; next, when the Hamas partially agreed to the ceasefire plan; and then again, when the first of the hostages were released.
Modi also called Trump to “congratulate his friend on the success of the Gaza peace plan”.
However, Modi has not yet publicly refuted Trump’s claim of brokering peace between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
Modi skipped the world summit at Sharm el-Sheikh where the heads of nearly 30 nations, including Pakistan, had gathered to discuss the Gaza peace process. Despite a personal invitation from El-Sisi, Modi chose to skip the summit and send Minister of State in External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.
The summit, titled ‘Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit’, was chaired by Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el Sisi.
