Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday, congratulating the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Om Birla for being elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, said, “It’s a matter of honour that you have been elected to this chair for the second time.”
“I congratulate you on behalf of entire House and look forward to your guidance for next five years during the Amrit Kaal. Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy,” Modi said in his address.
“Becoming the Speaker for the second time is a record in itself. Balram Jakhar got the opportunity to serve as the Speaker for the second term after five years and today, you are doing the same,” the PM added.
Birla was elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time after the PM moved a motion that was adopted by the House through a voice vote. Pro tem Speaker B Mahtab made the announcement after the Opposition, which proposed Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh as its candidate, did not press for votes to the motion, news agency PTI reported.
Hailing Birla’s role as a parliamentarian, Modi said that his work “should be an inspiration for new Lok Sabha members.”
“The conduct of members and their accountability increase faith of people in Parliamentary democracy… The previous Lok Sabha clocked 97 per cent productivity – highest in 25 years… I am confident that under your leadership, 18th Lok Sabha will fulfil the expectations of people,” the PM said in the House.
Underlining the achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha under Birla’s leadership, Modi said, “The works that didn’t happen during 70 years of independence, were made possible by this House under your chairmanship. Several milestones come in the long journey of democracy. A few occasions are such when we receive the opportunity to establish milestones. I am very confident that the country will always be proud of the achievements of the 17th Lok Sabha…”
