Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met R Praggnanandhaa, days after the 18-year-old chess prodigy made history by bagging the silver medal in the FIDE World Cup.

“Had very special visitors at 7, LKM today. Delighted to meet you, @rpragchess along with your family. You personify passion and perseverance. Your example shows how India’s youth can conquer any domain. Proud of you,” Modi said on X after meeting him and his parents.

Modi was replying to a post by Praggnanandhaa in which he had thanked the PM for the “words of encouragement”.


The 18-year-old lost in the final to five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen, but made history along the way and booked himself a spot in the prestigious Candidates tournament which is an event to find a challenger to world champion Ding Liren at the next World Championship contest.
