As Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s plea challenging the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons is scheduled for hearing in the apex court on Monday, the agency has issued a fresh summons, asking him to appear on September 23, it is learnt.
Earlier, the agency had summoned Soren to appear before it on September 18, however, due to the hearing the same day, the agency re-issued the summons for an inquiry under Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Soren had earlier responded saying that the summons did not disclose the ‘offence for which evidence is required’.
In November last year, Soren had appeared before the ED in connection with an alleged illegal mining case in which his aide Pankaj Mishra is also an accused and is currently in judicial custody.
This is the fourth summons Soren has been served with in the last two months and he didn’t appear before the agency in connection with the previous three. In a letter to the ED on August 14, he termed the agency action as a “political conspiracy to destabilise a democratically elected government”. The letter had stated that he was called to record a statement in respect of the properties ‘owned, possessed and occupied’ by him.
