Jaipur Hospital Fire: At least six critical patients were killed in a fire at the trauma centre of state-run Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur late Sunday night.
Here’s all you need to know:
1) The fire caused chaos in the building as thick smoke spread rapidly, triggering panic among patients and their families. Several documents, ICU equipment, and medical supplies were destroyed in the fire.
2) 11 patients, who were being treated in the Neuro ICU when the fire erupted in the storage area, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, according to trauma centre in-charge Dr Anurag Dhakad.
3) The deceased were identified as Pintu from Sikar, Dilip and Bahadur from Jaipur, Shrinath, Rukmini, and Khurma — all from Bharatpur.
4) Family members alleged negligence by hospital staff, claiming they ignored early warnings about smoke and were the first to flee once the fire broke out. They also accused authorities of withholding information about patients’ conditions amid the chaos.
5) Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the site along with senior ministers to assess the situation, while former CM Ashok Gehlot called the incident “heartbreaking” and demanded a high-level probe. He extended condolences to the victims’ families and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.
6) Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy in a Hindi X post, saying: “The loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a hospital in Jaipur, Rajasthan, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”
