Just days after assuming power in Jharkhand, Chief Minister Champai Soren on Friday affirmed that the JMM-Congress alliance in the state was very strong.
“We have our party, even if Hemant Sorenji is in custody. I am also a product of the party. Our party and our alliance are very strong,” the newly-elected chief minister said at the launch event of the ‘Abua Awas Yojana’ – a flagship housing scheme, under which assistance of Rs 2 lakh will be provided in four instalments to each of the identified 2,92,624 homeless families in Jharkhand – in Jamshedpur.
In its first round, about 24,827 identified families were allotted Rs 30,000. On the occasion, Champai Soren digitally transferred Rs 74.78 crore to the beneficiaries of the housing scheme, which also has provisions for constructing toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM).
Out of the 24,827 families, about 8,138 families belong to East Singhbhum, 10,252 families belong to West Singhbhum, and 6,437 families belong to Seraikela-Kharsawan districts. In the second instalment, beneficiaries will be provided with Rs 50,000, while in the third instalment, they will be provided with Rs 1 lakh, and Rs 20,000 in the fourth instalment.
Billing himself as “Hemant Soren part 2,” Champai Soren came out heavily on the BJP, alleging that the erstwhile Raghubar Das government had “left the state in such a poor condition that hospitals did not even have ventilators. Even in those circumstances, he (Hemant Soren) worked towards ensuring better health facilities for people.”
“Today, the BJP says that they will go to the villages, as the elections are approaching. Whichever village they go to, and whichever family they speak to, they will get to hear about Hemant Soren’s schemes… The BJP today is thinking what agenda will we take to the villages? Which progress will we speak to the people about? They have now become agenda-less, that’s why, today, they are misusing the central agencies,” he continued.
“The agency is independent, I respect it. We don’t have any issue if it works independently. There should be no discrimination. Whoever shifts to the BJP will be given a clean chit, whereas here, who do not have any allegations against them, are being arrested. This is being done with a very different motive. It should not happen like this. It should not be misused,” Champai Soren said while speaking to reporters.
His remarks came over a week after the former chief minister, Hemant Soren, was arrested on January 31, following more than seven hours of questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) over alleged ownership of a piece of land.
The JMM-Congress coalition in the state had then proposed Champai Soren as the leader of the alliance, and he won the trust vote in the state assembly on Monday, with 47 MLAs in the 81-member House voting in favour of the trust motion.
“Hemant Soren decided to provide homeless people with houses having three rooms. He had allocated today as the day and the location of Gopal Maidan for the launch of this scheme. That’s why we never changed the day, and launched the scheme today itself… We have to accomplish it in all circumstances… Nobody will be homeless, or live in dilapidated houses from now on,” the CM said in his speech.
“The BJP neither speaks about price rise, nor about employment, nor about education. They only put people in the dark. When they did not give funds under the PM Awas Yojana, Hemant Soren started the Abua Awas Yojana,” he added.
“We (the JMM-Congress alliance) will fight strong in the present circumstances… This government is your government. It is a government which stands at your doors to help you get rid of your problems,” Champai Soren further said.
The chief minister then reiterated that consumers will now receive free electricity up to 125 units a month, an increase from 100 units.
“We have to work more now… There are labour issues, farmer issues, unemployment issues, but we will work more in less time,” Champai Soren said.
Jharkhand MLAs Banna Gupta, Mangal Kalindi, Sabita Mahato, and other dignitaries shared the stage with the CM.
