In an all-party meeting Sunday, the Congress called for discussions on the bribery charges against the Adani Group levelled by US prosecutors and the situation in Manipur, among other topics, during the upcoming Winter Session of the Parliament.
Talking about the meeting, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari told news agency PTI that besides the aforesaid topics, the party also sought talks on pollution and train accidents.
One day before the Winter Session kicks off, the Centre met floor leaders of political parties to ensure the smooth functioning of the House. This comes on the heels of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s landslide victory in Maharashtra, and the INDIA bloc’s sweep in Jharkhand.
Last week, the US indictment of Gautam Adani alleging he offered Rs 2,029 crore in bribes to Indian government officials, triggered a political firestorm. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi called for Adani’s immediate arrest, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “protecting him”. In turn, the saffron party accused the Congress of “attacking the Indian market and trying to make it tank to damage the Indian economy”.
Addressing a press conference, Gandhi had made it clear that he would bring up the allegations against Adani in Parliament, signaling a stormy Winter Session.
The Winter Session of Parliament, beginning Monday, is scheduled to last till December 20. The government has listed 16 bills, including the Waqf Amendment Bill, for consideration.
