In a major setback to P Chidambaram, a Delhi court on Friday sent the former Union minister to judicial custody in Tihar jail for 14 days in the INX Media money laundering case. He is likely to be kept at Tihar prison’s Jail No. 7, PTI reported.
“He will be housed in Jail No 7. We have not yet received the court order. Adequate arrangements will be made in accordance with the order,” an official was quoted as saying by the news agency.
Considering that he is a protectee under Z-security, Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar directed that the Congress leader be kept in a separate cell at Tihar jail. He also allowed Chidambaram to carry his medicines to jail. Follow LIVE UPDATES here.
Opposing his client’s judicial custody, senior advocate Kapil Sibal said the veteran Congress leader was ready to go into the ED custody for interrogation in the money laundering case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the court that there will be adequate security for the 73-year-old in jail.
The court also issued a notice to the Enforcement Directorate on the Congress leader’s plea, seeking to surrender in the money laundering case lodged by the agency.
The Congress leader was produced before the court after the expiry of his two-day CBI custody. He has already spent 15 days in CBI custody after his arrest on August 21 night, ended today.
Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court had refused to grant Chidambaram pre-arrest bail in the case. The top court dismissed Chidambaram’s plea challenging the Delhi High Court verdict denying him anticipatory bail in the case, saying the economic offence has to be dealt with differently as it affects the economy of the country.
