New figures reveal extent of left wing extremism in Jharkhand

MORE THAN 38 members of the banned CPI (Maoist) outfit have been arrested every month in Jharkhand since January 2022, Chief Minister Hemant Soren said at the meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs on Left Wing Extremism in New Delhi on Friday.

Raising demands related to logistics of anti-Maoists operations in the state, Soren also said that Jharkhand witnessed a total of 187 Maoist incidents between January 2022 and August this year — around 10 incidents of violence a month. There were 90 such incidents last year while there were 97 incidents till August this year.

In total, 763 CPI(Maoist) cadres were arrested during the period, including three Special Area Committee members, one regional committee members, 10 zonal commanders, 16 sub zonal commanders and 25 area commanders, according to the data compiled by the Soren government. The CM said that in the same period 20 Maoists were killed in encounters with police and 37 lay down their arms. “Since 2021 there have been no attacks on any police station or police post in Jharkhand.”
