From classrooms to courtrooms: Parliament’s JPC plans big awareness, consultation push for ‘One Nation One Election’

From essay-writing and debate competitions for school and college students to meetings with former Chief Justices of India, the Parliamentary committee examining the two Bills for simultaneous elections is considering an extensive public consultation and awareness campaign on the One Nation One Election Bills, it is learnt.

On Friday, the Joint Committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty–Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, chaired by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, held its second meeting “to discuss the procedure and modalities for examination of the Amendment Bills”, as per the agenda.

Chaudhary said the discussion was “positive” and that members discussed an indicative list of stakeholders to be invited for written and oral submissions to the committee. He said the committee had decided that it should visit all states to interact with stakeholders.

It is learnt that an indicative list of 23 different categories of stakeholders includes political parties, retired judges, the Election Commission (current and former), industry bodies, trade unions, farmers’ unions, management institutes, think tanks, political analysts and election strategists and public sector undertakings.

The list also includes celebrities and the entertainment industry.

To seek public views, the committee will set up a website for submissions.

Opposition members, including from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress, are opposed to the idea, pointing out that the Bills that are yet to be passed by Parliament.

The Bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on December 17, 2024 and referred to the joint committee.

The two Bills enable simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and State/Union Territory Assemblies by syncing their terms.
