Over ten people went missing after a boat carrying a team of officials and local people to visit an erosion-affected area in Dhubri district of Assam capsized around 10:30 am this morning.
Speaking to The Indian Express, an official of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) at Dhubri said the boat accidentally hit an underwater pillar of the Dhubri-Fulbari bridge, which is under construction, on its way back.
The boat had over 25 people on board and sustained catastrophic damages due to the accident and capsized. A group of local people and government officials rushed to the rescue and helped around 15 people get back on land but over ten are still missing, the ASDMA official, who didn’t wish to be named, said.
Among the missing persons, are Dhubri revenue circle officer and magistrate Sanju Das (32). The boat had several other senior officials on board like disaster management field officer Peter Saha and Zilla Parishad member Baby Begum. The latter two were rescued and were rushed to a local hospital, where they were learnt to be stable now.
“Search operation is going on for the rest of the missing persons. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and local people have swung into rescue operations. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are coming in to join the rescue as well”, the official informed.
