Nitish Kumar picked as leader of JD(U) legislature party in Bihar; BJP’s Samrat Chaudhary, Vijay Sinha likely to be deputy CMs

Nitish Kumar JD(U) Leader: Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar was elected as the leader of its legislature party during a meeting of newly elected MLAs in Bihar’s capital Patna on Wednesday, a day before the new NDA government is set to be sworn in.

The decision was taken ahead of a meeting of NDA constituents, where Nitish Kumar is also expected to be chosen as the leader of the alliance in the state.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) named Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha as the leader and deputy leader of the BJP’s legislature party, respectively.

Nitish Kumar is set to take oath as Bihar Chief Minister for a record 10th time at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan on Thursday.

Kumar is scheduled to call on Governor Arif Mohammad Khan in the evening to request initiation of the government formation process, party leaders told PTI.

He resigned as head of the outgoing government and submitted letters of support from all NDA constituents to the Governor. The current Assembly will be dissolved on Wednesday.

The NDA stormed back to power in Bihar, winning 202 seats in the 243-member assembly, with the Bharatiya Janata Party bagging 89, JD(U) 85, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 19, Hindustani Awam Morcha 5 and Rashtriya Lok Morcha 4.

Among opposition parties, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) won 25 seats, the Indian National Congress six, the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) [CPI(ML)(L)] two, the Indian Inclusive Party (IIP) one, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] one seat.

All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) secured five seats, while the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won one seat.
