LS polls: BJP’s 1st list out, Sushma Swaraj’s daughter Bansuri Swaraj to contest from New Delhi

Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, is set to make her poll debut in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Releasing the first list of 195 candidates on Saturday, the BJP said Bansuri will contest from New Delhi.

The party has also fielded Manoj Tiwari from North East Delhi, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri from South Delhi, Kamaljeet Sehrawat from West Delhi and Praveen Khandelwal from Chandni Chowk.

Bansuri’s name was in the list of 17-18 candidates that were finalised following deliberations with the party’s state unit on Wednesday.

Bansuri entered politics with her appointment as co-convenor of the Delhi BJP’s legal department in March 2023.

She enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi in 2007 and has 16 years of experience in the legal profession. She has also worked as the additional advocate general for the state of Haryana, while running a private practice.

After completing her under-graduation at the University of Warwick with a BA (Hons) in English Literature, she went on to study Law at BPP Law School in London. She completed her Master of Studies at St Catherine’s College, University of Oxford.

For the New Delhi seat, the panel included Bansuri Swaraj, Anil Sharma and Satish Upadhyay, as per sources. The choice was made after deliberations between the BJP’s senior leadership from Delhi and BJP national president Jagat Prakash Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah a day before the CEC meeting.

The BJP released the first list of candidates days after a marathon meeting of the party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) that was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
