Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Sunday that 5,801 illegal immigrants from Myanmar had been detected in Kamjong district since a civil war broke out in the neighbouring country. Fifteen of them have died of natural causes and 359 voluntarily returned to Myanmar, he said.

The chief minister said the rest of the illegal immigrants from Myanmar were currently taking shelter in designated camps across eight villages in Kamjong district alone. These camps are located far from local habitation to prevent the immigrants mixing with the local populace, according to the chief minister.

“To protect the state, which has already been affected by various challenges and threats posed by illegal immigration, forest encroachment and poppy plantation, we will continue the deportation of illegal immigrants,” Singh added.

The Kamjong district administration, along with police, has initiated biometric data collection and intensified security measures around the designated camps. Plans are also underway for the reverification of all the immigrants’ details and their deportation once the situation in Myanmar stabilises.

The chief minister reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of Manipur’s indigenous community. He also urged cooperation from the public and warned against the dissemination of false information, stressing the importance of maintaining law and order.

As per official sources, mostly village local committees manage the designated camps with ration provided by the district administration. The immigrants are provided identity cards by the administration and a headcount is done every alternate day.

The immigrants are keen to go back to Myanmar as the cultivation season has started there but they have become hesitant because of the bombing by the Myanmar army in the past few days, according to the sources.

Biometrics of 284 illegal Myanmar immigrants in the district will be immediately captured and uploaded on a web portal managed by the Union home ministry, the sources said, adding that the district administration would reverify all the immigrants’ details in the designated camps at the earliest.

The police have been asked to strengthen the security deployment in the district, especially in and around the designated camps.
