The Manipur Government on Thursday clarified that BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, who was brutally assaulted by a mob amid the outbreak of violence in the state, was not “forgotten” as claimed by certain sections of the media. Valte represents Thanlon constituency in Pherzawl district, a Kuki -Zo-dominated district.

Manipur government spokesperson and Information and Public Relations (IPR) Minister Sapam Ranjan rubbished the narrative manufactured by sections of the national media and said, “He is not forgotten. We care for him.”

Valte was on his way home after a meeting called by CM Biren Singh when a mob brutally assaulted him in Imphal on May 4 as violence broke out in the state. Ranjan said that besides extending monetary assistance to the MLA and visiting him, the government has been praying for his speedy recovery so that Valte can continue his service to the people.

Recounting the incident, the IPR minister said the legislators were having a meeting at the chief minister’s bungalow. “By that time violence had escalated across the state, and the chief minister had advised the MLAs not to leave the CM bungalow. Even Vungzagin himself was requested not to leave the premises for the time being. We all were saddened upon learning about the unfortunate incident that the MLA was brutally assaulted,” he added.

Following the advice of the chief minister, the state constantly monitored Valte’s condition after he was admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal. Ranjan said they also arranged an air ambulance to shift him to Apollo Hospital in Delhi when his condition turned critical.

“The Chief Minister himself contacted the MLA’s wife time and again seeking updates about his condition. We showed our care and concern for his well-being,” he added. Ranjan also rejected reports claiming that the MLA was given electric shocks.

The minister also announced that a session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly will be convened in the second or third week of August.
