A seven-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a man who hid in a bathroom at her school in Jaipur, police said on Sunday.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of the police station that has jurisdiction in the area said the incident took place on Saturday morning at around 11 am, when the accused allegedly jumped the school wall and hid in the school toilet.

“He hid in the school toilet and raped the child when she entered the toilet. He then escaped after jumping from the school’s boundary wall, the same way he came in. The child then told her teachers about the incident, who then informed the authorities,” the SHO said. The girl’s parents have lodged a police complaint.

The SHO said that during the investigation, the police zeroed in on a man who lives near the boundary wall, and have detained him. “As of now, we have detained him and the questioning is on,” the SHO said, adding that based on the complaint by the child’s family, an FIR under rape charges and sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered at the police station.

Reacting to the incident, former chief minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot said, “The rape of a seven-year-old girl in a Jaipur school is enough to illustrate the state’s law and order. When girls aren’t safe even in a school in the capital, where else will they be? This is a testament to the state’s declining law and order situation. The BJP government has failed to provide a safe environment for girls and women.”

Rajasthan’s Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully targeted Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s BJP government, saying, “What is happening in Rajasthan? The rape of a seven-year-old girl in a school in the capital, Jaipur, exposes the failure of law and order here. News of such crimes is instilling fear in the minds of parents. This situation is the biggest proof of the BJP government’s failure and insensitivity. Chief Minister ji, how long will Rajasthan tolerate this lax system?”
