Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge hospitalised in Bengaluru, to undergo pacemaker implant procedure

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was hospitalised in Bengaluru on Tuesday after he developed a fever, with doctors recommending that he get a pacemaker implanted.

The 83-year-old Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha was admitted to Bengaluru’s MS Ramaiah Hospital where his condition is reportedly stable at present.

His son Priyank Kharge, who is the Minister for Electronics, IT and Biotechnology in Karnataka, said the veteran leader “was advised pacemaker to be implanted and is admitted to the hospital for the planned procedure”.


Mallikarjun Kharge (83) was hospitalised in the morning with complaint of fever and pain in his leg. Kharge is the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

Kharge scheduled to attend Northeast rally next week

Kharge, who has been leading the All India Congress Committee (AICC), is scheduled to travel to Kohima on October 7 to address a major public rally at Naga Solidarity Park. The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee announced that the gathering is expected to draw at least 10,000 people.

“He is stable and doing well,” Priyank said on Wednesday afternoon. “Grateful to all of you for your concern and wishes,” he added.

“Kharge-ji was taken to hospital on Tuesday as he developed fever and had pain in his legs. He is fine, and there is nothing to worry. Doctors are monitoring him,” a Congress leader said.

The Congress leader is scheduled to visit Kohima in Nagaland on Tuesday, October 7, and address a public rally at Naga Solidarity Park. The programme, themed around ‘Safe Democracy, Safe Secularism, and Safe Nagaland’, aims to highlight key issues such as unemployment, entrepreneurship, good governance, and road connectivity.

The rally is to be followed by separate meetings between Kharge and senior members of the Congress Political Affairs Committee, Pro-Committee, as well as presidents of District Congress Committees (DCCs).
