After being on the run for more than two months, a 15-year-old girl suspected of being involved in the murder of her father and eight-year-old brother in Madhya Pradesh was detained by police in Haridwar Wednesday.
According to police, her father had disapproved of her relationship with a 19-year-old man. This allegedly led to her killing the father with the help of the 19-year-old, and then chopping up his body. The eight-year-old brother is suspected to have been killed after he woke up and saw the incident.
The double murder came to light on the morning of March 15, when a police team was dispatched to the girl’s home, which was found locked from the outside. When they broke open the door, police said they found the two bodies – the father on the floor and the eight-year-old boy stuffed in the fridge.
Haridwar SSP Parmedra Dobhal said the girl was taken into custody for questioning when she was roaming suspiciously near the District Hospital in Haridwar along with the 19-year-old, who however, managed to evade the police.
“During a routine police check, we received information about a couple… near the District Hospital. They were called for questioning, but the man managed to escape the police. During questioning, the girl informed that she was wanted for the murder of her father and brother in Jabalpur (district of Madhya Pradesh). When we contacted Jabalpur police, they confirmed this. The Jabalpur police are also coming here for questioning and after that, we will hand the girl over to them,” said Dobhal, adding that further action would be taken in coordination with Jabalpur police.
Before the murder, the 19-year-old had been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act following a complaint filed by the girl last year. He was arrested and served time in prison, but was later released on bail. While police initially believed the man was the sole suspect in the double murder, officers said they found CCTV footage showing that the man and the girl were together at the time.
After the murders, the two were spotted at Madan Mahal Railway Station, where they abandoned their vehicle before taking an autorickshaw and heading to the bus stand. From there, they boarded a bus to flee Jabalpur, police had said.
