Two days after a Lord Rama idol was installed in place of a statue of Tripura former deputy chief minister Baidyanath Majumder that was vandalised in 2018, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has demanded the government reinstall the statue in Unakoti district and relocate the idol with full dignity.

In a letter written to Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday, Chaudhury said that an idol of Lord Rama was installed at the Srirampur Tri-junction of the Chandipur RD block in Kailashahar in place of the late CPM leader’s statue installed in 2012.

“The former deputy CM’s statue was vandalised by a group of miscreants right after the 2018 Assembly election and threw it into Manu river. The then chief minister, Biplab Kumar Deb, had expressed regret over the incident and had asked well-wishers to set up another statue in the same place. Local residents were preparing to set up another statue. But this incident (installing a Lord Rama idol) occurred suddenly in the dark of the night on Friday,” he wrote.

“I have two proposals: arrange for the provision of required administrative assistance to reinstall the statue of people’s leader Baidyanath Majumder in the same place without any hassle and an administrative arrangement should be made to install Lord Ram’s idol at a genuine location with full dignity,” he added.

Chaudhury wrote that Biplab Kumar Deb had also assured that Majumder’s statue would be reinstalled. An initiative was taken to build a new statue but it coincided with the installation of the Lord Rama idol, he added.
