Lok Sabha on Tuesday witnessed disruptions over an unusual reason as the Opposition protested against tickers running on Sansad TV highlighting the government’s development works during live broadcast of the debate over the no-confidence motion. As BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, the first speaker for the party, began his speech against the motion, BSP member Danish Ali stood up and pointed out that television screens inside the House, broadcasting the debate on Sansad TV, were running tickers about achievements of various ministries.
Soon, several Opposition members protested over the issue. Although seemingly taken aback momentarily, members of the Treasury benches soon put up a brave face — Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi even wondered why the Opposition could not digest the developments ushered in by the Centre.
Speaker Om Birla was seen trying to find out how it happened, and instructing officials. The tickers were on the achievements of the ministries of Ayush, the Fisheries department, highways and PMGKY schemes.
Birla asked the members to calm down and said he had asked officials to find out. He noted that a different system was in place to run Sansad TV after it was created following the merger of Lok Sabha TV and Rajya Sabha TV.
Birla later said he has issued instructions, and said the tickers will stop running. While the lines went away in a couple of minutes, they returned soon enough. As Opposition MPs rose again in protest, Birla said, “The control of the television is not with the Speaker.” Opposition members insisted that the channel should stop running those tickers. The House resumed functioning only after the tickers disappeared from the screen.
