The Supreme Court today granted bail to four life convicts in a murder case after the “deceased” Bhagwan Dass,in a bizarre turn of events, reportedly surfaced in the open and claimed he was very much alive! A bench of justices R M Lodha and H L Gokhale, while granting bail to Dal Chand,Mohan,Ramprasad and Rameshwar, said to be a juvenile, asked the Uttar Pradesh government to file its counter-affidavit.

“We want to re-open the whole issue. It is a very serious matter if the allegations are true,” the bench said.

Senior counsel Ratnakar Dash, appearing for the State, while disputing the claim of the convicts assured the court that he would file a proper affidavit with all relevant facts to dispute the claim of the convicts.

Counsel Manohar Singh Bakshi and K K Baid, appearing for the convicts, besides seeking bail for the convicts on the ground that they were falsely implicated sought a compensation of Rs 50 lakh each for the four as they were languishing in the Agra Central jail for the past 11 years.

The four convicts were arrested in August 2000 for the murder of one Bhagwan Dass at Allai Town of UP’s Jhansi district on the basis of the reported eye witness account of his son Dhani Ram.
