PCC chief,son among 24 dead in Bastar,PM slams ‘security failure’

The bodies of Chhattisgarh PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel his son Dinesh were recovered.

Over 12 hours after Chhattisgarh PCC chief Nand Kumar Patel had been abducted along with his son Dinesh following a Maoist attack on the border of Bastar-Sukma districts,their bodies were recovered on Sunday morning. Both had been shot dead. Their bodies were taken to Jagdalpur,from there in a special plane to Raipur and then to their village in Raigarh district.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi arrived in Raipur and addressed party workers at Congress Bhavan. “This is an attack on democracy. Our party is a party of those who sacrificed their lives… we must hold patience,” Sonia said.

The Prime Minister later held a meeting with top functionaries including Governor Shekhar Dutt,DGP Ramniwas and Chief Minister Raman Singh. The PM is said to have taken a strong exception to the entire incident and expressed displeasure at the “security failure”.

Meanwhile,the death toll increased to 24,including eight cops and three labourers who had been in a truck that was caught in the ambush. All the injured have now been shifted from Maharani Hospital in Jagdalpur to Raipur.

Karma will be cremated at his village in Dantewada tomorrow. Patel’s relatives have demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.

Former Union minister V C Shukla,who was injured in the attack,was airlifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon.

The Prime Minister promised to provide every possible assistance to the Chhattisgarh government in dealing deal with Maoist violence. He also urged people to rise above party politics to fight Maoism.
