Commending security forces for their “brave and heroic” efforts under very adverse circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Thursday that the responsibility for maintaining law and order in the state will increasingly devolve on the local police.
“I had a very good interaction with the officers and men of the paramilitary forces and Jammu and Kashmir police. The responsibility for maintaining law and order in the state will increasingly devolve on the J and K police,” Singh said in a statement here before leaving for New Delhi at the end of his two-day visit to the state.
The Prime Minister addressed jawans and officers of state police,CRPF and BSF at Humhama on Srinagar-Airport road on Thursday morning.
“I commend the brave and heroic effort of the security forces under very adverse circumstances in the state,” he said.
However,the PM said,the “standards of accountability and transparency” have been raised in their working in order to enhance public trust and confidence.
Lauding the role of paramilitary forces in maintaining peace and safeguarding the borders of the country,Manmohan Singh said that the entire nation will always back them up.
Paramilitary forces have played an important role in Jammu and Kashmir,north-eastern states,Maoist affected areas in cubing terrorism by working in adverse conditions for which they deserve special appreciation,he said.
Singh also said that he was glad to meet the paramilitary forces and added that they have a great history in maintaining peace,law and order. “You provide help to people and play role in conducting free and fair elections,” he said.
He paid tributes to valiant officers and jawans of paramilitary forces,who sacrificed their lives while discharging their duties.
The Prime Minister said that the government is aware of their problems and is contemplating measures to provide better facilities to them in border areas and far-off places.
He called upon them to work with more dedication to strengthen the nation and eliminate terrorism and communalism. Singh also wished the security personnel success and new heights in their careers.
The director general of police Kuldeep Khoda gave a detail resume of police working in the state,explaining its role in improving security scenario in the state.
