Govt seeks views on sexual assault being put into IPC

Government has invited views or suggestions from people and State administrations over replacement of word ‘rape’ by ‘sexual assault’ in the Indian Penal Code.

A high-powered committee under the chairmanship of Union Home Secretary,formulated to look into the draft Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill,2010,has suggested that the word ‘rape’ be replaced by ‘sexual assault’.

“The draft Bill has been uploaded on the website of the Ministry of Home Affairs (www.mha.nic.in) for information and comments from the general public by May 15,2010,” Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.

He said the views or suggestions of State Governments and UT Administrations have also been invited on the draft Bill by May 15,2010.
