Tension flared in parts of Manipur’s Churachandpur district after the house of a Kuki-Zo leader was set on fire in Dorkas Veng village by a mob in the early hours of Monday.

Police said the house belonged to Khenthang Calvin, a leader of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) — a signatory to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact with the Centre.

In another incident, the house of Ginza Vualzong, the spokesperson of Kuki Zo Council (KZC) and the ITLF, also came under attack but timely intervention by the locals helped prevent the house from being set on fire.

“I don’t understand the motive. This is not the first time miscreants have tried to target me. One thing is sure some people have always been against me for being part of KZC and ITLF… for reasons best known to them,” the ITLF spokesperson said.

Tension in parts of Churachandpur district headquarters was simmering since Sunday as people took to the streets demanding release of two arrested persons.
