Koregaon Bhima: Delhi HC begins contempt proceedings on Gurumurthy

The bench issued contempt notice to the journalist on a plea by advocate Rajshekhar Rao, who has alleged that the journalist’s tweets and retweets were an attempt to attack a sitting judge of the high court and to scandalise the judiciary.

The Delhi High Court on Monday initiated contempt proceedings against journalist Swaminathan Gurumurthy, who has allegedly questioned the integrity of a judge who gave relief to social rights activist Gautam Navlakha.

Navlakha is one of the five activists arrested in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence on January 1. A bench headed by Justice S Muralidhar had held Navlakha’s arrest as illegal and had ordered his release.

A bench of Justice Hima Kohli and Justice Yogesh Khanna issued contempt notice to the journalist on a plea initiated by it on a letter by advocate Rajshekhar Rao, who has alleged that the journalist’s tweets and retweets were an attempt to attack a sitting judge of the high court and to scandalise the judiciary.

The bench also directed that the tweets in question be removed from the websites and other social media platforms.

The court has now fixed the matter for further hearing on December 11.
