Kerala Assembly set to move resolution opposing uniform civil code

As both CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF are opposing the UCC, in all likelihood the resolution will be passed unanimously in the Assembly, where the BJP has no legislator. The CPI(M) and the Congress have already held a series of seminars and conventions as part of their campaigns against the UCC.

The Kerala Assembly will likely adopt a resolution Tuesday urging the Centre to not implement the proposed uniform civil code (UCC). Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would present the resolution in the Assembly, as per the list of business for Tuesday’s session.

In recent years, the Kerala Assembly has passed resolutions against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the farm laws of the Union Government. In January 2020, Kerala was the first state to pass a resolution against the CAA. The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Vijayan, and seconded by the then Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala. In 2021, the Kerala Assembly unanimously passed a resolution, urging the Centre to accede to the demands of the agitating farmers and take immediate measures to repeal the three contentious farm laws.

In May 2021, after the present government came into power, the Assembly unanimously passed another resolution demanding the recall of Lakshadweep administrator Praful Khoda Patel and the withdrawal of his orders. In July last year, the Assembly passed another unanimous resolution urging the Union government to exclude human settlements from the purview of the eco-sensitive zone of protected forest tracts.
