At least nineteen people, including three children, lost their lives as massive landslides hit the Wayanad district in Kerala.

The first landslide occurred at approximately 2 am, followed by a second, more severe landslide around 4:10 am, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

A video released by All India Radio News Trivandrum showed the aftermath of the disaster, showing damaged homes and infrastructure, and interviews with residents who described the fear and devastation brought on by the landslides. The footage also highlights the ongoing rescue operation.

An additional NDRF team, along with two teams from the Kannur Defence Security Corps, is en route to assist in the rescue operations.

Heavy rainfall has exacerbated the situation, making rescue efforts challenging and dangerous. Many people are feared washed away in the Chaliyar River in the Nilambur region of Malappuram. In Mundakkai, numerous houses, shops, and vehicles are buried under debris, with a crucial bridge washed away, complicating access to the affected areas.

Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has announced plans to seek army assistance to construct a temporary bridge, evacuate those trapped by helicopter, and set up necessary facilities at the disaster site.
