Congress MLA Uma Thomas was seriously injured on Sunday evening after she fell from the VIP gallery of Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, where she had arrived to attend a dance programme.
She was rushed to a private hospital, where she was immediately put on ventilator support.
The MLA, who represents the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency, was a guest at the event along with state minister Saji Cherian.
While entering the VIP gallery at the stadium, she reportedly tripped on a queue manager that was kept on the side of the stage. This led to her falling around 15 feet from the stage.
Dr Krishnan Unni Polakulath, medical director at Renai Medicity, where she was taken, told the media the MLA was put on ventilator support soon after she was admitted to the hospital.
“She has sustained injuries to the brain, spine and lungs. Blood has clotted in the lungs, which got injured by broken ribs. She is not out of danger and will be in observation for the next 24 hours. She was admitted in an unconscious state. The major concern is injuries to the brain and lungs,” doctors said.
Uma Thomas became a legislator after winning the by-election in 2022 that was necessitated by the death of her husband and Congress leader P T Thomas.
