A BJP district functionary in Kerala, who petitioned the High Court Tuesday seeking a ban on the screening of Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan, has been suspended from the party’s primary membership on charges of indiscipline. The court also refused to grant interim relief to the petitioner, V V Vijeesh, a member of the BJP district committee, Thrissur.
Vijeesh had claimed that the film screening could incite communal tension and disturb public order due to the reference to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The bench of Justice C S Dais, which heard the petition, said once the censor board issues a certificate to a movie, there is a presumption that the film is fit for screening. The court also noted that as of today, no crime has been registered by the police in connection with any incident related to the screening.
The petitioner had arraigned the Union Ministry of Broadcasting, the regional officer of the censor board, film director Prithviraj Sukumaran, actor Mohanlal and producers Antony Perumbavoor and Gokulam Gopalan as respondents. The court will next consider the matter on June 3.
On the suspension of the party leader, BJP Thrissur city district president Justin Jacob said the decision was taken with the consent of the state leadership. “Vijeesh took a stand contrary to that of the party’s state leadership. He approached the High Court as party district committee member, hence the action,’’ he said.
