The Karnataka government will make efforts to ensure that products manufactured in the state contain labelling in the Kannada language, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Friday on the occasion of the Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations.
“The goods and products that are being manufactured in Karnataka in the private and government sector currently carry only the English language on the packaging. Going forward, the packaging must also carry the names of the products in Kannada as well and we will make efforts toward this goal,” the Congress chief minister said at an event to award 69 winners of the annual Rajyotsava award.
“We will create an atmosphere of Kannada in Karnataka where people learn the language and use it on a daily basis. This will be the honour that we accord to the language,” he added.
Siddaramaiah also announced the setting up of a Kannada museum at the old Mysuru district commissioner’s office which is known as the Attara Kacheri.
“The Attara Kacheri has been replaced by a new office and since the old office is not being used we have decided to create a Kannada museum at the old office in Mysuru,” Siddaramaiah said.
The Karnataka chief minister said creating an environment where non-Kannada speakers learn Kannada is necessary for the growth of the Kannada language.
“When I am in power, I will not allow Kannada to be debased. I was the president of Kannada Kavalu Samiti in 1983. A situation has arisen in Karnataka where a committee is required to protect Kannada. This committee is still functioning as the Kannada Development Authority,” the Karnataka CM said.
“There should be love among human beings but there should also be a love for language and culture. Even if you learn another language, you should not forget your Kannada mother tongue. The Kannada language has got the status of a classical language. We all have to work to help Kannada gain the respect it requires,” Siddaramaiah said.
The Karnataka CM in the course of multiple events to mark the Rajyotsava Day also issued a warning against abusing and insulting the Kannada language. He said there is a trend among some people on social media to insult the language and strict action would be taken against those debasing the language and culture of the state of Karnataka.
